Inquiry Group Question

How can students perfect objectivity in critiquing art?
In requiring students to observe their peers in performances, attend productions and write reviews, I am always looking for ways to emphasize the need for objectivity in a rather subjective form of writing. Often times the best models are difficult to read for high school students because the sources tend to be from intellectual theatre publications. I would like to find exercises, graphic organizers, and smaller scale assignments to give them a solid idea of what a thorough critique would be.

  1. The Praise Question Polish model is a useful means to help with critiquing in the Visual Arts, and I would imagine that this is something that you could use for Theater as well. It's a great way to prompt discussion and you can even offer questions under each section, to help students formulate their thoughts. I suggest using this model regularly, in order for the students to get use to the vocabulary that should be used in discussion. I don't have a link, but I can give you a copy of the PQP model that I use in my classes, during our next class meeting.
